POSITION: Utility Substation Estimator

REPORTS TO:  Group Manager of the Line Group




The Estimator will provide estimating services including material take-offs, data entry utilizing Accubid estimating software, material pricing requests, specification review, scope review and evaluation of labor installation conditions.  This will be performed for change orders and competitive estimates.  In addition, the duties will include providing project support duties as requested by the Lead Project Manager.




  • Perform basic symbol counts (take-offs utilizing BlueBeam software) from construction drawings and blueprints.
  • Input take-off counts into computer utilizing estimating software and all available take off tools including designations, assemblies, etc.
  • Determine basic material requirements from technical specifications.
  • Set-up breakdowns, update labor, expenses, and final pricing screens.
  • Record information/clarifications and any items of risk discovered during take-off and document review that may be pertinent to the scope/clarification document.



  • Associates Degree or equivalent work experience in a corporate setting
  • 3-5 years' experience in utility substation estimating
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven ability to work within a team with a high degree of organization and positive attitude
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Accubid software (Word, Excel, BlueBeam required)
  • Ability to effectively utilize and implement technology and a commitment to learn in the technology environment
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast paced environment
  • Willingness to work long hours in response to project needs.
  • Thorough understanding of labor risk factors including but not limited to location, weather, labor availability, installation difficulty, and scheduling.
  • Advanced knowledge of all standard civil, structural, and electrical systems in utility substation construction projects.
  • Physical - Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs, extended standing, reaching, stooping, kneeling and crouching, ability to use hands and arms to grasp and manipulate objects.
