Chief Estimator

Reports to Executive VP/CFO

Job Summary 

This position is responsible for the oversight of the estimating process for all projects throughout the company as well as leading and conducting final reviews of all estimates created by the estimating department and those created in other groups, as dictated by the current estimate review thresholds set up for each operations group. This position is expected to provide leadership and mentoring to the estimating and construction project teams and to manage and coordinate the people, processes and procedures, software and other resources used to perform the estimating functions, in alignment with all Company policies, procedures and regulations.

Essential Functions

  1. Establishes process strategy and estimating standards for all projects.
  2. Maintenance and modification of all estimating software and databases.
  3. The ability to communicate professionally and maintain a high level of credibility with general contractors and other customers (internal and external).
  4. Accurately presents estimates to senior management in a concise yet thorough manner and always raising awareness of all risk in a project and their order of magnitude.
  5. Assigns responsibilities for estimating teams on each project.
  6. Ensures all project plans and specifications are reviewed and coordinates with the team to confirm complete scope.
  7. Coordinate with the Purchasing department, who solicits subcontractor and/or supplier information and pricing, to ensure accuracy and completeness of all quotations.
  8. Reviews general conditions, schedules, scopes of work, hoisting plans, site logistics and other exhibits prepared by the project team.
  9. Ensures the flow of project information is maintained and documented. Maintains and communicates data on construction and material cost trends affecting project costs.
  10. Builds/maintains effective relationships with customers, design teams, specialty contractors, suppliers and user groups that reflect and support the Company's core values and meet or exceed the customer's expectations.
  11. Actively participates in industry, client and community relations to enhance the Company image.
  12. Ensures all estimates and RFP's are fulfilled to the customer's or Sachs' conditions for satisfaction.
  13. Reviews all estimates within his/her prevue for accuracy.
  14. Hires, trains, coaches and mentors estimators and other co-workers for future growth within the Company.
  15. Stays informed of new materials, technologies, techniques and practices.
  1. Maintains compliance with all federal, state and local laws and regulations.
  1. Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending education workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies relevant to the industry.
  1. Supports the mission, vision and values of the Company and works creatively to best support the Company's long-term goals. Champions and models the Company culture at all times.
  1. Performs reviews and raise/salary recommendations for all personnel in the Estimating department.
  2. Follows all guidelines, policies and procedures established by the Company.
  3. Performs other tasks and duties as assigned.


Supervisory Responsibility

Supervises a team of estimating professionals.

Expected Hours of Work

Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, with the expectation to work specific schedules and hours as warranted by the current workload.


Occasional travel required when needed.

Required Education, Experience and Skills

  1. Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience in the construction industry or a related field.
  2. Minimum 8-10 years of electrical construction experience in estimating, common code requirements, and design/build estimating.
  3. Minimum 3-5 years of experience in a senior-level estimating role.
  4. Experience with computerized estimating systems and software and strong conceptual estimating skills.
  5. Skills to read, interpret and understand electrical contracts, plans, drawings, blueprints and specifications.
  1. Training, experience and skills with project management.
  1. Demonstrated visionary strategic leadership and communication skills for employee groups at all levels, as well as customers, subcontractors, vendors and other community leaders.
  2. Excellent communicator/collaborator, with the ability to clearly and concisely articulate ideas and concepts and the ability to build strong working teams, cultures and relationships at all levels and cross functionally.
  3. Strong business acumen and experience collaborating with senior leaders in a high growth, process-oriented business setting.
  4. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including high quality documentation and report preparation.
  1. Strong listening, presentation, negotiation, conflict management and persuasion skills, as well as the ability to influence employees at all levels, including senior-level management.
  1. Demonstrated ability to diagnose complex problems with strategic critical thinking skills and detail orientation, as well as to drive appropriate solutions with self-initiative and sensitivity.
  2. Strong analytical and mathematical skills.
  3. Demonstrated high level of diplomacy, integrity and leadership in employee engagement.
  4. Ability to hire, coach, mentor and develop estimating department personnel, providing support to build high performing, highly engaged teams.
  5. Ability to manage workflow, without oversight, in a fast-paced environment with multiple and sometimes changing priorities.
  6. Proficient skills in Microsoft Office software applications.
  7. Excellent time management skills.


Preferred Education and Experience                                         

  1. Training and experience managing people.
  2. Previous experience using and administering Accubid or similar estimating software.
